6 Your Trustees at Work
President's Column by Delores Robinson
Neighbors, we need your help! We need committed neighbors to serve as trustees, social neighbors to help plan the Neighborhood Picnic, and neighbors with “green thumbs” to plant flowers in the neighborhood. Read on and see how you can help keep our neighborhood, a friendly, caring, and beautiful place to live.
A few of our districts are only being served by one trustee, and we need at least two for each district. We need trustees for Districts 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10! That's a lot of missing trustees! Would you consider serving in one of these districts? Trustees meet once a month, attend the Quarterly Meetings, pass out flyers in their district, and plan and participate in the neighborhood projects. The Triangle is one of the best-organized neighborhood federations in the city, and we want to keep it that way. Dayton officials listen to residents who live in organized neighborhoods.
April showers bring May flowers, but not without a lot of work!!! However, the work is worth it because the flowers are beautiful. We need your help to beautify our neighborhood. We have five community flower gardens in the Triangle. Faithful neighbors maintain three of these, but two areas are in need of more hands. These two are the area surrounding the Gazebo on the grounds of Omega Baptist Church's Harvard Campus, and the “island” on Otterbein Avenue between Salem Avenue and Catalpa Street. With the help of a few more good people we could really add a touch of beauty to our neighborhood!
We are looking forward to having a fantastic 2007 Neighborhood Picnic on Sunday, August 19th on the Harvard campus of Omega Baptist Church. We will have plenty of food, games, music, time to meet and greet neighbors, and plenty of fun. Wouldn't you like to be part of the planning committee? We would love to have your ideas!
Support the Dayton View Triangle Federation and your neighborhood by volunteering for any of these responsibilities. Please call or e-mail your district trustee or me. As always, our numbers and e-mails are listed on the second page of the newsletter.
We hope to see you at our next Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, May 20th at 7:00 p.m. at Bonebrake Hall (the building with the clock) on Omega's Harvard Campus. The main speaker will be one of our neighbors, Dan Sweigert, with the Home Ownership Center. We also hope to have a horticulturist to talk about yard care. Light refreshments will be served.

Trash or Treasure?
by Lori Mayo
Start getting those treasures ready! It's Garage Sale time again! The Triangle's Annual Neighborhood Garage Sale is Saturday, May 19, from 9 AM to 3 PM. If it rains - start doing those sunny-day dances now! -- on Saturday, the sale still goes on and will continue on Sunday, May 20 from 12:00 noon to 4 PM. It's up to you whether you want to continue on Sunday. Every household is welcome to be a part of the sale. It's free! BUT if you would like to have your sale listed on the map, you must be a current member of the neighborhood association.
Please contact Lori at 278-2836 for more information. And get out and visit the sales on Garage Sale Day. You never know what you will find - including a new friend or a neighbor you get to know better.
And if That's Not Enough….
Jill Hamilton of the University Row Neighborhood tells us that there will also be a Community Garage Sale that same Saturday (May 19) , from 8 AM to 3 PM on the grounds of Fairview Middle School at Hillcrest & Philadelphia (in the gym if it dares to rain). This garage sale is co-sponsored by Fairview Middle School and the Mt. Auburn and Sunnyview-Catalpa Park Neighborhood Associations in conjunction with the Phoenix Project and the FROC Priority Board. So if the Triangle doesn't yield the treasure you were hoping for, stop by Fairview and see what's there!
Neighborhood Coffees
Jill also reminds us that on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM, there is a gathering of neighbors at the North River Coffee House & Eatery at 323 Salem Avenue. Last month, five neighborhoods were represented! The "First Saturday Club" was begun by our neighbors in Dayton View Historic District; they encourage people from all the adjacent neighborhoods to attend.
Landscaping Plans
The Phoenix Project plans a new undertaking that will benefit the Dayton View Triangle. CityWide Development Corporation, which manages the Phoenix Project, has engaged EnvisionWorks, a landscape architect firm, to help design an attractive entrance to the neighborhoods at Salem and Catalpa. A portion of the next Phoenix Project Public Meeting will be devoted to a presentation by EnvisionWorks that will include an exercise to gather resident input and ideas for this intersection. This meeting will be Tuesday, May 22 at 7:00 PM at Fairview United Methodist Church (corner of Catalpa and Fairview). All Triangle residents are invited to come and share ideas, or just meet some of the other citizens who are active in making our neighborhoods better.
Two Guys and a Stencil
by Steve Blatt
Are you cleaning up the yard in preparation for summer? You have a lot to do with the mowing, raking, weeding, mulching, etc. on your calendar! So, why bother putting your house number on the curb or driveway apron when you can get help? TWO GUYS AND A STENCIL CAN GO TO WORK FOR YOU!
For only $10 you can have your house number printed on a green or white background. All work is guaranteed (your money back if you are not 100% satisfied!), and done by experienced spray painters. So contact your neighborhood trustees, Steve Blatt at 277-5534 or Jerry Shultz at 277-7821, for the job you would rather not do yourself!
The Egg Hunt That Wasn't
Well, we tried, two weekends in a row… the weather just didn't cooperate. Cindy Farrow and her stalwart crew were out there in the rain for an hour or so each time in hopes that some children would appear. We are very sorry if anyone showed up after that!
ØØ Please volunteer for the picnic !! × ×
The Dayton View Triangle - It's Your Neighborhood!
Meet Your Trustees - District 1
Ami Bement has lived in the Triangle for over 10 years in a Spanish-inspired house on Burbank Drive. She has enjoyed being a trustee for many of those years as well as chairing a Triangle Home Tour and serving on several home tour committees. Ami is a commercial interior designer and her husband Tim is an architect. They chose to live in the Triangle because they appreciate older homes with unique craftsmanship and interesting features. Walking in the neighborhood with the kids, visiting with Triangle friends throughout the year, gardening, and renovating the house are just a few favorite pastimes. "The Triangle is a very special place to call home! We have met so many amazing people in the neighborhood over the last ten years and our lives have been greatly enriched."
Ellen Rice is a newcomer not only to the Triangle but to Dayton. A visit to Laura Haney (who sang the praises of the neighborhood ) put Dayton high on her list of places to settle when she tired of the Washington, DC rat race. Ellen moved here in 2004, and found herself a trustee in 2005 and the newsletter editor in 2006. While her new-graduate daughter Chrysantha thinks anywhere is more exciting than Dayton, Ellen is very happy with the cultural life here and with the welcoming Triangle neighborhood. She only regrets that having to work for a living (and maybe too much folkdancing) prevents her from making her house and garden as beautiful as they deserve to be.
Results of the 2007 Triangle Neighborhood Survey
by Delores Robinson
A big thank-you to 43 of our neighbors who took the time to respond to our Neighborhood Survey, when they returned their 2007 dues. Their responses are very helpful to the Trustees as we plan activities that meet your needs. There were 10 questions; these were the top responses.
How long have you lived in the Triangle? 31 of the responders have lived in the Triangle for 20 years or more.
What are the main reasons that you decided to live in the Triangle? The majority of the responders (22 for each reason) chose this neighborhood because of the ethnic diversity and variety of architectural designs.
Do you own or rent your home? All but one of the responders own their homes.
How would you rate the overall appearance of the neighborhood? Most responders (27) rate our neighborhood as Good. 11 responders rate it as Excellent.
How often do you read the Dayton View Triangle ViewPoint newsletter? An overwhelming, 39 of 43 responders always read the newsletter.
If you have children, what are their ages? The largest number of the responders (27) have grown children who are on their own.
Do you attend the Quarterly Meetings? Alas, 23 neighbors responded no, they do not attend the Quarterly meetings. Only 10 said yes, they do attend.
The Quarterly meetings are held on Sundays at 7:00 p.m.; is there a better time? There were only a few suggestions, such as Saturday mornings, Tuesdays or Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., or Sundays at 6:00 p.m. Most responders said Sundays at 7:00 p.m. is fine.
What topics/speakers would you suggest for the quarterly meetings? Several possibilities that were suggested more than once were: home improvement & repairs, gardening advice, and services for the elderly. (We plan to address the second at the coming Quarterly Meeting.)
Please list concerns about the neighborhood, the Federation, or City services. The top three concerns were: 1) abandoned, neglected houses; 2) rental properties that are not kept in good repair; and 3) crime Issues - gunshots; drug trafficking, break-ins.

The Neighborhood Spring Quarterly Meeting Takes Place on May 20th
ALMOST HERE! The DVT Spring Quarterly meeting will be held on Sunday, May 20th at 7:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE that we are moving it back to Bonebrake Hall (the building with the clock) on Omega Baptist's Harvard Campus, at the request of some of our Federation members. Omega has been kind enough to make the downstairs meeting room available to us once again.
Continuing our concern with helping people keep - and keep up - their homes, our featured speaker will be one of our neighbors, Dan Sweigert, who works with the Home Ownership Center. Our second speaker will be a landscaping and horticulture expert to talk about yard care (now that spring seems to be here to stay).
Light refreshments will be served following the meeting. If you missed the last meeting - where your newsletter editor is convinced that Rose Fox's almond bars were the winning dessert submission - you'll just have to try harder to make it this time. Or bring your own prize-winning recipe!
Your Trustees at Work
Your trustees heard an extremely interesting presentation at our March meeting. Keith Kline of the city's Office of Economic Development explained to us a little-known mechanism that we might be able to use to move some of the abandoned houses in the neighborhood into the process that would make them available for sale. We have a committee looking into the history and current tax status of a number of neglected Triangle properties. We will let you know the results of their investigation, and what actions (and expenditures) we feel would be appropriate If you are interested in being part of this process, please call your district trustee or Delores Robinson.
