Breaking News -- Ice Cream Social
and  Movie Night   August 26th!
by Ami Bement
The Dayton View Triangle Ice Cream Social and Movie Night will be held Saturday, August 26th at 6:30 p.m. on the Omega Baptist/ Harvard Campus lawn behind Bonebrake Hall.  Your ice cream tickets should have been delivered on a flyer this past week.  Bring your lawn chairs or blanket and enjoy a Triangle tradition!  It's a chance to catch up with your neighbors before the summer is almost over.  With the kids in mind - the Ice Cream Social is always a favorite for them - the animated movie “ROBOTS” will also be shown at 8:00 p.m.  on the big screen in the lower level of Bonebrake Hall.

President's Column                        by Delores Robinson
I have had a fantastic summer!!  My husband, sister, and I traveled to Kenya, Africa.  I love to travel and Africa has always been a dream trip for me.  We traveled for 20+ hours to get there, but it was well worth it.  The highlight of the trip was going on safari, where we were able to see the large wild animals, such as the elephants, giraffes, lions, buffaloes, and hippos, in their natural habitat!  It was fantastic!  Being in Kenya during their winter, we were able to see the beginning of the wildebeest migration, when the thousands of antelopes make the journey from Tanzania to Kenya's Masai Mara National Park for the new grass, which is 3 feet high.  The antelopes have plenty to eat, their predators also have plenty to eat, and the cycle of life continues.
Kenya has wonderful national parks and Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city, but many of the people still live under primitive conditions.  Many of them live in huts, without running water, bathrooms, or electricity.  The people work very hard, especially the women, who must carry fresh water long distances, maintain small gardens, care for the goats, and still raise children, cook, and maintain the home.  It helped me to really appreciate the abundance that we have in America and how important it is for us to share our wealth with those who have so little.
I returned home just in time for the annual Home Tour, which was wonderful!  Many of you supported this major fundraiser for the Triangle neighborhood, and we thank you for making the event a success.  The weather was very cooperative and we had about 250 people visit the neighborhood.
A special thank-you to our hardworking chairperson and her committee.  The Chairperson was Charlene Molnar, and committee members were Ami Bement, Mike Mangan, and Steve Molnar.  Of course, we could not have had a home tour without the neighbors who were gracious enough to open their homes to us.  We thank Bill Davner & Michael Lanterman, Vance & Gabrella Clark, Grady & Dana Burkett, Rodney & Deanna Bowman, Marc & Amy Cary, Mike Mangan, Jason Voss, and Fred & Celeste McFarland.  Their homes were all beautiful, and each was unique.  Visiting their lovely homes certainly inspired my husband and me to get started on some needed projects for our home.
Our next Triangle Quarterly Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 10 at Omega Baptist Church's Harvard Campus, in the chapel on Harvard Blvd.  Please plan to attend and be an active and involved neighbor.  I hope to see and greet you at the meeting.

Phoenix Project Update
by Jill Hamilton
Picnic:  The Phoenix partners and staff would like to thank our friends and neighbors for their support.  Please plan to attend the next Quarterly Public Meeting for a very brief update followed by a casual, outdoor supper.  Our picnic will be held under a canopy to provide shade from the August sun (and shelter from any summer storms)!  The picnic will be held on Tuesday, August 29, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., at Fairview Park - 900 McCleary Avenue.
New Hotline for Phoenix Police Officers: The Phoenix Project community-based Policing Program continues to be very successful in making our area safer. You can help in these efforts.  As you probably know, in addition to their work around Good Samaritan Hospital, Officers Rod Roberts and Chris Malson are also working in a portion of DVT near Salem Avenue  There is a new hotline for the Phoenix officers: 333-1333. You may leave a detailed message on the recorder at any hour of the day;  be sure to give the specific address You may choose to leave your name and phone number in case they need more information.  Remember that suspicious activity reported to this number is for the portion of DVT that is between Salem and Otterbein, and that the hotline is for information that is not urgent. If you need an officer to respond to a situation right away, continue to call DPD Dispatch at 333-COPS (2677) and, of course, continue to call 9-1-1 for an emergency.
NOTE: You may also email information about suspicious activity in the DVT portion of the Phoenix Project to the addresses listed below. Remember that it may take a day or two for them to get your message, so as mentioned above this is not the way to report something for which you would like immediate action.

 The Loveliest Fundraiser
by Charlene Molnar
Yet another beautiful and successful Dayton View Triangle Home and Garden tour was held on Sunday, July 9th.  Over 240 guests took advantage of the cool, breezy afternoon to tour the seven homes and one standalone garden that made up our sixth annual tour.
Each of the wonderful stops on this year's tour was completely different from the others, and our guests' comments ranged from “Wonderful tour” to “This is the best home tour I have ever been on” to “I never miss your fantastic tour.”  Our guests could not say enough about how great the homes were and how much they appreciated the diversity of architecture.
While guests could walk the tour with the map provided in the professionally produced tour book, many took advantage of the two vans that were driven on the tour route throughout the day.  Even the van drivers were complimented by many of the people who traveled the route with them.  They loved having their own personal “tour guide!”
We also had many compliments on the friendliness of the neighbors the tourgoers met.  In addition, there were the usual  comments about how our guests never even knew this beautiful neighborhood existed.
As Chairperson of the Home Tour, I want to thank all the homeowners who so graciously opened their homes to our guests.  And thank you to the many volunteers who were  involved in putting on and hosting a marvelous occasion.
Our biennial tour is a great promotional tool for our neighborhood, and has many community business supporters.  It also helps fund many of the projects and events that the Triangle Federation holds throughout the year.  I hope you'll consider opening your house in 2008, or at least join us in helping with publicity, selling tickets, and the other myriad tasks that go into making our Home Tour a great success.

The Dayton View Triangle - It's Your Neighborhood!

Neighborhood Flower Gardens
Have you ever wondered who takes care of the five flower gardens in the  common areas of our neighborhood?  Most of the flowers were donated by the city of Dayton, but were planted and are cared for by dedicated neighbors.  A special thank you to these neighbors who have volunteered lots of hours to beautify the neighborhood!

Several of the gardens are in great need of weeding, as you may have noticed.  We really could use some help with this task.  If you like gardening and want to keep our neighborhood looking good, please consider volunteering.  Call Steve Blatt (277-5534) or Delores Robinson (277-8031).

Watch Out -- We Need YOU!!!
Many thanks to Stacye Donaldson for taking over the Halloween party!  But we still need a coordinator for the Neighborhood Watch program.  The Neighborhood Watch coordinator only needs to keep track of the existing groups, and help anyone interested to start one.  The outgoing coordinators, Lori Mayo and Mary Baker, will be happy to help you get started!  Call them on 278-2836 and 278-8057 respectively.

Curb Numbers Invade Neighborhood
In the last several weeks, house numbers have mysteriously appeared on curbs.  After a through investigation, it was discovered that the numbers did not appear on the curbs, but were painted on by two of our neighbors, Steve Blatt and Jerry Schultz.  It seems that these fellows are raising money for the neighborhood association by charging $10 to paint your house number on the driveway apron or on your curb.  They are offering a white or green background with black or white numbers.  So far 25 households have opted for this service.  If you would like to join them, call Steve at 277-5534.  If you want to know how it looks, see the curbs across from each other at 700 and 703 Otterbein.

Fall Neighborhood Quarterly Meeting Set for September 10, 2006
Save this date!!  The Federation's Spring Quarterly meeting  will take place on September 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel on Omega Baptist's Harvard Campus (formerly the United Theological Seminary's campus).  Our main speaker will be City Commissioner Dean Lovelace.  He will address neighborhood concerns about vacant and neglected houses, and try to answer any questions you bring him.  He also plans to talk about predatory lending.
We expect a representative of the Fair Housing Commission to join us as well.  We may also have a third speaker who has been active in DVT affairs for many years and is particularly knowledgeable about housing issues.  Please join us - you may learn more than you expected!

Report on the Spring Quarterly DVT Meeting - May 23, 2006
The Dayton View Triangle Federation's winter meeting was something of a town hall meeting.  Home Tour plans were presented by Charlene Molnar, and Lori Mayo talked about the Neighborhood Watch program and the upcoming garage sale.  A great deal of the meeting was devoted to discussing neighborhood concerns - vacant and neglected buildings, noisy dogs, speed bumps.  One proposal that will require further consideration was the revival of a DVT bumper sticker, to make it easier to identify cars that do not belong to residents.  The trustees are continuing to discuss the issues raised, and explore what actions the Federation can take and where we might be able to get help from various City departments
