Greetings to all of you who live in the greenest most flowerful neighborhood in the City of Dayton.
Lt. Sherrer of the Fifth District Police was our speaker at the Winter Quarterly Meeting. Thanks to Mike Dolinski for arranging this! Sherrer spoke eloquently of the problems in our neighborhood and at Col. White High School. The 60 + neighbors who attended signed petitions of support for Sherrer, which were sent to the School Board, the Director of Police and the City Commission.
The Spring Egg Hunt was held on a sunny Saturday at the Gazebo on UTS grounds. More than 60 children searched for eggs, received treats from our local Bunny Rabbit. Check out our website ( www.daytonviewtriangle.org) to see Ben Brown's pix of the kids and adults. Many thanks to the event's mover and shaker Cindy Farrow, her family, and to trustees Kay Rizer and Laura Haney.
The Troutman Building at Salem and Catalpa is still scheduled for demolition.
Head green thumb Alecia Schroedel reports that 19 neighbors have signed on, leaving only one plot unsold in the community garden on the UTS campus.
Finally, there is no news about UTS moving any time soon. And I say, God love them, I hope they can stay for a long time.
Five Blocks Organized into Watch Groups by Lori Mayo Email Lori
The Neighborhood Watch Program now has 5 blocks organized, and more are almost ready. Under the direction of Triangle resident and retired Dayton police officer Mary Baker, our neighborhood watch program has been re-energized. Two meetings have been held thus far to get going -January 15 and April 18. At those meetings residents learned how to organize their blocks and may have even volunteered to be a block captain.
Block captains talk with their neighbors to see if they are interested and then compile a list of the addresses and phone numbers of those on their block. They also distribute to their blocks Watch Reports containing details of crime or suspicious activity in the neighborhood. This helps us to be well-informed of any suspicious activity so that it can be reported to the police as soon as possible. It turn, it helps to build stronger neighbor relations and a stronger, safer neighborhood.
If you are interested in learning more about organizing your block and becoming a block captain please contact Mary Baker at 278-6114 or Lori Mayo at 278-2836.
Mark your calendar for a Triangle tradition! On Sunday evening, June 13th at 7pm, join friends and neighbors on the oval at United Theological Seminary for some ice cream and conversation. Bring your own lawn chairs or a blanket and relax. Then enjoy a movie, Finding Nemo, in the chapel free of charge. An upcoming neighborhood flyer will provide further details and tickets for the complimentary ice cream treats. This is the 2nd quarter General Meeting.
Soggy Weather for Garage Sale by Lori Mayo Email Lori
The 27th Annual Triangle Neighborhood Garage Sale was held on May 15. As many as 50 families signed up. Saturday morning was gray and wet, but many with covered porches and those with enough room in their garages still forged ahead with the day. Some still braved the chilly, damp weather-those who love those garage sale Saturday -- to find those treasures that have been hiding in our homes. Some sales were made. At my house, I met some lovely people from the neighborhood as well as from other areas. We enjoyed conversation as we stood in the garage watching the rain come down! Well... there's always next year!
House of the Quarter by Amy Bement Email Ami Bement
A beautiful Colonial Revival at 1601 Benson Drive has been selected for the current Dayton View Triangle House of the Quarter. Built in 1940, this brick home is situated on a corner lot that is expertly and colorfully landscaped by the owners. Hundreds of tulips bloomed earlier this spring in several flowerbeds, and soon irises, hydrangeas and roses will be in full flower. The back yard is a wonderful retreat where water fountains, a pond and a canvas gazebo provide sights and sounds of solitude. The side sunporch has been transformed into an outdoor living room which overlooks the many flowerbeds of the front, side and back yards. All hardwood floors have been refinished, the kitchen and bathrooms updated, and stained glass light fixtures have been installed.
The owners, Bill Davner and Michael Lanterman, have inspired and helped a number of neighbors to rejuvenate their landscaping. Just walk by the corner of Benson and campus to appreciate the park-like setting. One last interesting fact about this home: according to a previous owner. It was the first to have central air conditioning in the Triangle.
To nominate a House of the Quarter, please contact Ami Bement at 275-7493.
